A child of the 60's I often feel out of place in the world as it exist today. Too much excess, too much materialism, too few people who genuinely care or give a damn.

It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.

If My Heart - Turn Up The Music

If my heart can become
pure and simple
like that of a child,
I think there probably
can be no greater happiness
than this.

happiness than this."

Wisdom

I stand most humbly
Before man's wisdom,
Knowing we are not
Really wise:
If we were
We'd open up the kingdom
And make earth happy
As the dreamed of skies.

            Langston Hughes

I can't think of many
Who were wiser,
Who made earth happier,
nor openned up the kingdom
more than Michael
As LA Reid so aptly put it......
'maybe now they will turn down the chatter and
turn up the music."

Rest in peace you beautiful dreamer,
Rest is Peace

Peace,

I Don't Know About Reparations

When I walk down the street
you make sure your
car doors are locked,
you hold your children
closer and cling tighter
to your purse.

You remember to have that conversation
with your daughters and shopkeepers
are more vigilant when I walk
through the front door.

The instrument used to terrorize
generations of my forefathers
is now material for school-yard jokesters
and office pranksters.

Every time you lock me up,
you say it's to make the community
a safer place,
and
you lock me up
with impunity.

I don't know about reparations.....

But at least pay me
for the public service
I perform.

Last Night I Dreamed

Last night I dreamed.
Not something I do often,
Not something I could really understand.
It was strange, the images haunting,
The feelings oh so real.
Last night I dreamed.

Last night I dreamed.
I was in a setting unfamiliar,
With people I seemed to be
Only vaguely acquainted.
Some I seemed to have feelings for,
While others I barely knew.
Last night I dreamed.

Last night I dreamed.
I said my goodbyes,
Some were more poignant
Than others. Some had
No emotion at all.
Some brought tears and fears,
And some seemed
To bring relief.
Last night I dreamed.

Last night I dreamed.
I found myself traveling,
Following some distance star.
Seeking someone to help me understand it.
Trying to find the happiness that has eluded me.
The love that I have needed so desperately.
I arrived at my destination unannounced.
You were there waiting.

Last night I dreamed.

El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz/Malcom X

Today marks the birthday of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, known to many as Malcolm X.  Many have written about this civil rights activist, scholar and philosopher who was gunned down at a pivotal time in his life. He is loved and loathed by many who remember two, very different men. El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz was more than a dichotomy -- he was a complex human being, figuring out his place in the world in the public eye, one day at a time. He is more than hats, t-shirts and a seminal film. He is an important figure in American culture. We thought we'd bring you some of his notable achievements, which we hope will inspire you to

search for more information about his complicated life.  Click here to learn more about the man and the legend commonly known as Malcolm X.

Happy Birthday Malcom
